any issues from the issuer or network’s perspective

the type of transaction being attempted.

The issuing bank or the network switch couldn’t be reached to authorize the card, often due to
temporary system maintenance, technical glitches, or network issues
Negative file match.
Verification failed. The verification data provided during the authorization process did not match
the issuer’s records. This often indicates a mismatch in information like the cardholder’s billing
address, postal code, or CVC (card verification value).
Pick up card. The issuing bank has declined the transaction and requested that the card be
retained by the merchant.
Invalid Issuer. The payment network cannot identify the credit card issuer from the number
entered. This is typically due to human error, such as a mistyped card number, or an incorrect or
unrecognized card number.
Transaction not permitted.
Restricted card. The card is restricted from use in the current region or country.
Transaction cannot be completed. The transaction was flagged as potentially violating legal
regulations, sanctions, or specific transaction restrictions

authorization process, and did not provide a specific reason. The network recommends re-entering
the payment details and attempt the transaction again.

No account.
Invalid Pin.
Exceeds withdrawal amount limit. The transaction’s amount is higher than the card issuer’s allowed

cardholder’s identity for the transaction
No action taken. The transaction was declined by the card issuer, but with no specific reason or
corrective action provided, possibly due to a system error, communication failure, or an
unidentified issue with the transaction itself.
No credit account. The card number used is not linked to a valid credit account.
No checking account. The debit card used is not linked to an active checking account.
No savings account. The card used is not linked to an active savings account.
Closed account. The cardholder’s account has been closed by the issuer or the cardholder, or
there’s a validation issue preventing the transaction from being approved.

submitted, preventing the card issuer from recognizing it.
Invalid transaction. A general error indicating the transaction could not be processed because of
an error in the transaction details or a restriction on the card or merchant account.
Transaction not permitted to cardholder. The card used is restricted from the type of purchase,
acceptor, or location. Examples include security restrictions on the card, such as foreign
transactions, or specific card settings prohibiting online purchases, ATM withdrawals, or large
purchases.
Transaction not allowed at terminal. The payment terminal itself is not set up to process the type
of transaction being attempted, or the merchant account is misconfigured, preventing the
transaction.

card type or the transaction itself is not supported by the issuer.

potential issue with illegal activity.

Cash service failed. The issuing bank, for various reasons, is unable to authorize the cash
advance or ATM withdrawal requested.
Authentication failed. Unable to verify the cardholder’s identity, which can be caused by
incorrect details entered, a technical glitch during PIN verification, or issues with the
authentication process itself.
Invalid MCC. The merchant category code (MCC) used for a transaction is either incorrect, doesn’t
match the merchant’s business type, or is being used in a way that violates network rules.
Unsolicited reversal. The acceptor tried to reverse a transaction but there was no matching
original authorization recorded in the issuer’s history.
Already reversed. The original transaction has already been reversed, canceled or undone by the
payment network. This code isn’t a decline in the traditional sense; it’s a system response
indicating the transaction is no longer valid because it’s already been handled.
Reversal not needed. A reversal was attempted, but because the original transaction declined, no
reversal of funds is needed.
Financial institution not found. The payment gateway or processing network is unable to forward
the transaction to its intended destination, such as the card-issuing bank or another financial
network
